Nourishing Additions: Sandwiches

Sandwiches are the ultimate vehicle for a variety of toppings and flavor combinations. As stereotypical as it is, there are very few things I enjoy eating for lunch more than a good sandwich, and also love that they are so versatile for any meal of the day.

Here are some ideas to elevate any sandwich to make a nourishing and satisfying meal:

🍞πŸ₯–Choose bread that complements your taste and texture preferences (and any allergy/intolerance needs). There are so many options from flavorful sourdough focaccia, to hearty whole grain seed bread, and all have their place!
The carbohydrates in bread can give us fuel/energy, fiber, and joy, and also set the tone for the rest of the sandwich!

πŸ₯ͺAdd a sauce or spread. From pesto to aioli, hummus to guacamole, there are so many flavorful options to spread on bread before adding the rest of your toppings.
Sauces and spreads add flavor, creaminess, and a source of fat to make sandwiches all the more delicious and satiating.

🫘Include a source of protein. Some of my personal favorites are tofu cutlets, chickpea salad, tofu bacon, bean burgers, hummus, and peanut butter❀️
Protein makes the sandwich more filling, balances with the carbohydrates in the bread to keep us fueled for longer, and tends to be the true heart of the sandwich!

πŸ…πŸ₯¬Add veggies/fruit. From colorful roasted veggies, to leafy greens, to the classic lettuce and tomato, they are the finishing touch for truly every kind of sandwich!
While cooked veggies can be seasoned and pack tons of flavor, raw veggies can add a crisp refreshing element. Both cooked and raw veggies add vitamins, antioxidants, fiber, and vibrance to the meal.

Include any of your favorite textural extras. Some of my favorites here are chocolate chips in peanut butter and banana sandwiches, and crunchy seeds in savory sandwiches. Even just a sprinkle can really elevate the texture!

What are some of your favorite sandwich combinations?!
